"Brother Tree" and "Christ Brother Tree"
These sculptures are a representation of what I imagine having a brother is. The smaller Brother Tree represents the distortion that grief puts on our perception of people who we have lost. It is small to create the intimacy of my experience with losing my brothers as a child. I felt that Brother Tree was meant to be small and intimate, like my own experiences, so the large version was meant to relate further to a larger audience. The larger Brother Tree represents the connection we all have through the human family tree, nodding to the religious symbolism of Christ on the tree or cross as a way of new and continued life. Beckoning as the universal brother, looking out for the world. He is abstracted so that he can be interpreted openly, turning into whoever the onlooker needs him to be to feel looked out for.
